Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Michael Harney and Zac Efron.
A critical part of bringing the film to life was creating character looks based on real people.
For me, that was part of their charm.
They were just amazing wrestlers.
They were the boys next door, the local heroes.
We had limited resources because it’s a smaller-budget movie.
Despite the real Davids penchant for experimentation, Dickinson only wore one wig during filming.
While the film is about the entire family, it centers on Efrons Kevin.
Therefore, the goal was to age him and showcase the passing of time without doing anything too drastic.
Rose had two custom wigs in different lengths made for him.
One was a three-quarter wig, so it was his own bang, Rose says.
It made [Zacs wig] look a little bit better, and it moved better, Rose says.
The wigs were not permed.
WigmakerRob Pickenshand-tied hair into the wig with the exact wavy texture and base color Rose requested.
The built-in wave added texture that allowed the hair to fall naturally when the actors were sweating.
Rose notes that the custom-made hand-knotted wigs have less hair than compared to the average wig, too.
Honestly, that’s one of the things that can make it look wiggy.
Another consideration for the wigs worn in the film, particularly during the wrestling scenes, was safety.
Rose parted the wigs to follow each actors natural part so you could see scalp under the wig.
From there, she pinned the hair in place with toupee clips.
If something happened, I could pull two pins and rip the wig off, no problem.
While Efron and Dickinson relied on wigs, White was able to use his own hair mostly.
We didCapelli K-Tip Keratinextensions, Rose says.
[Jeremy] was the only one that had to go home in his look.
The coverup required alcohol-based makeup, which affected the characters overall skin tone.
Youll notice Efron is significantly more tan than Dickinson and White, which was a thoughtful decision.
Glycerin is sticky and it’s uncomfortable.
(Fun fact: The wigs had to be hand-washed every night after filming because of all this.)
In addition to perfecting the perspirations consistency, Favorule had to keep sweat continuity in mind.
Scenes in the film were shot from multiple angles and oftentimes out of order.
