Condor talks to Allure about growing up with parents who didnt look like her and other formative beauty memories.

I’m Asian American.
I grew up in a household that was not Asian at all, but my brother was Asian.

However, I kind of grew up the way they grew up.

My castmates were all talking about [the Southeast Asian fruit] durian a couple of days ago.
I’ve never had durian, but a lot of my castmates grew up having it.
My first memory of using a beauty product was in the second grade.

I grew up taking ballet and it was the first time I used hairspray for a performance.
It was a purple can of nasty hairspray that I used to slick my bun back.
Being a ballerina very much defined my earlier sense of beauty, for better or worse.

Its what I wore for ballet and I loved it.
That’s the negative side of my first understanding of makeup from the performance world.

We have different skin.

I stopped ballet at 19 because I started acting.
The idea of acting and being able to use my voice was like, “Oh, hell yeah.

I’d much rather do that.

The Me Too movement was happening and representation was more at the forefront.
They light me differently because I have a round face.
I have beauty marks that they’ll light to get rid of it.
I think the industry really likes to perfect a face.
And at her ultimate they call her “bad bitch she was wearing so much makeup.
It was so intense, so very TikTok-y, and not natural at all.
This was not the makeup artist’s fault; she was doing her job and that was her direction.
The character was just so not who I am as a person.
I guess that’s the joy of acting.
But it also can feel uncomfortable.
I loved my makeup in theTo All the Boysmovies.
I love a fresh face.
I’ll do a heavy beat if I have to, and I love it.
It’s one of my favorite things.
I love graphic eyes.
I love big, bold lips.
But when it comes to everyday looks, [my character] Lara Jean always looked very fresh.
Pretty natural, but fresh and romantic, and she wore a lot of blush.
I wear a lot of blush in life.

Actually, the movie that I’m on right now is interesting.
They were very specific about my appearance as well, because its an all-Asian cast.
The specific note was that my appearance should be more classic Asian beauty and not Asian American beauty.

My understanding [of that] is that in America, we love contour.
We love a little bit more of a sculpted look.
I love lashes and I love a snatched look.
But the direction was to be more classically Asian beauty from Asia” so no lashes, no contour.
More of, like, glass skin, kind of inspired by K-beauty.
In regard to trends and makeup, there is a difference.
My journey to finding out who I am and my roots is a very interesting one.
Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose.
That’s something that I very much loved aboutTo All the Boys.
I think that my identity journey will go on forever and ever and ever.
