And yet, I worried that “industry veteran” would be misconstrued as a euphemism for “old.

Clearly, I had never interviewed Mally Roncal before.
“Wait a minute, wait a minute how old?”
she replied with an adorable incredulity.
I tell her Ill be 43 in April.
“You look like a teenager,” says the 50-year-oldwho looks like a teenager.
“He was like, ‘You’re like a cup of coffee in the morning.
They need that lift, that push, that cheerleader.
You’re like a mom, yet you’re a drag queen.'”
Although Roncal isn’t literally a drag queen, she feels very much at home in drag queen spaces.
That humongous fan she whipped out?
She got it at DragCon.RuPaul is one of her best friends.
It wasnt just Roncal’s buoyant personality that put her on the makeup-artist map, of course.
You dont get to go along on superstar world tours and major editorial shoots just by being sweet.
And don’t even get Roncal started about those Evercolor Shadow Sticks.

In the 17 years since Mally Beautys inception, she has watched social medias influence on beauty change dramatically.
“I feel like it’s our time.
“We’ve lived through the trends that are coming back.”
