Sunscreen is usually [just] sunscreen, but I wanted this to be skin care, says Harlow.

“I wanted this to be hydrating for your skin.”

ALLURE: There are sunscreen myths when it comes to black skin.

What are you hoping to dismantle with Cay Skin?

Winnie Harlow:I wanted to squash that whole narrative that Black people don’t need sunscreen.

It’s not true at all.

Like, yes we do.

No one’s melanin is enough to protect them from the sun’s rays.

ALLURE: How do your Caribbean roots shine through your beauty routine and in your day-to-day life?

Winnie Harlow:I love islands.

I love to be in the heat.

Im Caribbean through and through.

Cay Skin was named after the cays or keys which are little pockets of islands [in Jamaica].

I wanted to package the Caribbean in a bottle.

ALLURE: I read you had a severe sunburn several years ago while modeling.

How did this impact you and the way you think about suncare?

I remember my dad rubbing sunscreen into my skin with his rough hands.

He’s a mechanic.

I hated the experience.

Winnie Harlow:I’ve definitely gone to the beach with a full beat.

People are like, You’re at the beach with makeup on?

Thats so unrealistic.'

But I like makeup.

It might get messed up while Im there, but it’s cool.

I wanna get cute, you know?'

ALLURE: What’s a beauty moment you cherished the most when growing up?

Winnie Harlow:My first weave I ever got was at my auntie’s salon in Jamaica.

I was in middle school.

It had a middle part and a sidebang situation.

ALLURE: When you travel, what beauty products do you always pack?
